NEW YPT Required

"The BSA has announced bold, wide-ranging updates to its Youth Protection program as part of an ongoing effort to protect young people from child abuse. Every Scouter must complete the updated Youth Protection Training.

Even those Scout leaders who took the previous version of Youth Protection training must log into and complete the updated Youth Protection course. You have until Oct. 1, 2018, to do so. The updated course will take about an hour to complete.

The updated course debuted in February 2018; if you took Youth Protection training prior to that, you’ll need to complete the updated course by Oct. 1, 2018."

Preview: Paul R. Christen High Adventure Base

"Skateboarding, rock climbing and an unbelievably awesome activity called "bikepacking." At the Paul R. Christen High Adventure Base at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, Scouts choose their own adventure.

Immensely customizable, the Paul R. Christen base allows troops and crews to split into smaller groups when they arrive. So if you have two Scouts interested in shooting sports, three who want to try BMX and four into rappelling, the answers are: yes, yes and yes."

What is the Paul R. Christen base? Click here for more information.

New Merit Badge - Exploration

This week the Boy Scouts of America officially released the Exploration merit badge, celebrating a Scout’s spirit of adventure. "After learning about the history and importance of exploration, Scouts plan, prepare for and go on an actual expedition. Scouts must plan and take a trip to somewhere of interest to them; it can be close by or far away. It can be a troop activity or a small-scale excursion."

"Once there, the Scout will study something. Maybe he’ll analyze a location’s animal population, classify plant species at a state park or explore the effects of drought on an area. The primary goal is that the Scout learns something, plans the trip (with his counselor’s OK) and has fun."

New Boy Scout Requirements Mandatory

The new Boy Scout rank requirements are now in effect. As of January 1, 2017, all Boy Scouts - regardless of rank - must begin using the new Boy Scout requirements. Click here to see more.

The BSA established 2016 as a transition year, allowing Boy Scouts to choose whether to use the new requirements or finish up their current rank with the old ones. Now that it’s 2017, every Boy Scout must use the new requirements.

Scout Planning Worksheet

The BSA has released the Scout Planning Worksheet, a new tool that Scouts can use to plan patrol or troop activities. The goal is to build project-planning prowess that will benefit Scouts in their Eagle project, at school and in life. The goal was to give a boy familiarity with the planning process throughout his Scouting experience. See it at this link.

It will be integrated into the updated Senior Patrol Leaders Handbook, out soon, and will be included in Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) and other appropriate Boy Scout literature as those come up for review.

New World Conservation Award Requirements

The BSA National Conservation and Environment Task Force has announced new requirements for the Boy Scout World Conservation Award. The new requirements, which are now in effect, can be found at this link. The new requirements reflect the recent changes to the Cub Scout advancement program and the addition of the Eagle-required Sustainability merit badge in the Boy Scout program.

This is done by requiring that the youth applicant participate in a conservation project as part of an approved Scouting program. The project must total at least three hours and address a conservation need common to more than one country.

  • Adobe PDF Files

For proper page scaling when printing Adobe PDF files from within your Web browser, do NOT use the Web browser print facility. Instead, use the print button at the left end of the special Adobe Reader tool bar, which appears directly above the viewing window.

  • MyScouting Tips

Once successfully completing an online course, don't forget to print the certificate of completion and forward a copy to Troop 62 Training. If a course has been successfully completed, but the radio dial button has not changed to green, please contact CCC Training with your name, the course name and the date completed. Your record will be updated manually and you will be sent a pocket training completion card; there is no need to take the course a second ... or third time.

  • Safari Adobe Plug-in

On an Intel-based Mac, if the Adobe Reader tool bar is not present then PDF files are being viewed in Safari using the Mac OS X native PDF viewing engine. Adobe Reader 7 only shows PDFs in Safari under Rosetta. However, when you upgrade Adobe Reader from 7 to 8, PDF files no longer show in the Safari window. Instead a large Adobe Reader icon displays in the middle of the Safari window. Adobe Reader 8 will not show PDF files in Safari run under Rosetta. To work around these issues, you have to either turn on/off Rosetta for Safari, or turn off Display PDF In Browser; in which case PDF files will be viewed in Safari using the Mac OS X native PDF viewing engine.
